However, central vacuum systems can seem mysterious to people who haven’t seen one before. After all, a home with such a unit has inlets, which magically vacuum dirt and debris while betraying none of the backend technical stuff that operates them! We thought we’d break down the basic functionality of a central vacuum system unit for this reason.
Convenient Inlets Connect to a Central Power Unit
With a central vacuum system, “inlets” are installed on the walls of your home. These inlets then lead to a series of tubing that connects to the central power unit, which is typically installed in the basement, utility closet, or other hideaway space. When properly installed, the evidence of owning a central vacuum system is the sleek, low-profile inlets on your walls.
Inlets Can Connect to Hoses or Be Placed at the Base of the Floor
How do central vacuum inlets work? Functionality varies based on the model, but the fundamentals are the same. In most cases, inlets will be activated once a hose is connected. The hose is typical of your standard vacuum hose, although they are typically longer. Once connected by a hose, your system comes to life, and you can begin vacuuming.
For spaces with hard surfaces (think wood, vinyl, or tile) you can even install a “dustpan” style of inlet. These inlets are activated by a sensor or button and will vacuum up whatever you sweep toward them.
Debris is Filtered through a Vacuum Filter or Cyclonic Action
Like a portable vacuum, dirt is filtered from debris. What is the difference between the two? Dirt is the visible stuff that can be dumped out. Debris, or particulate, is fine dust that is trapped by filtering technology. This is the stuff that can cause respiratory problems like allergies and has the potential to clog and damage the internal components of your system if not caught.
Your central vacuum system can use a paper filter or filter through cyclonic action. This is the very same technology as your portable vacuum, only more robust.
Dirt is Carried to Central Unit Receptacle for Emptying
Finally, after passing through the tubing in your walls and filtering fine particulate, the dirt settles into your central unit’s receptacle. This chamber is much larger than your portable vacuum and typically only needs to be replaced every 3 months.
